I’ve used the original Osmo in the past and thought it was great. Got to borrow one and after a 2 weeks of use, I essentially stopped using it. I got tired/lazy on having to take video/photos to my desktop/laptop to share with friends and family. That step was just too cumbersome even though the quality was great.
Smartphones have created unprecedented convenience and combined with social media, convenience will often trump quality. Hence the large decline in point and shoot cameras for Canon and Nikon. I think Osmo mobile is a very smart move for the company. Whether you have Apple or Samsung, iPhone or Galaxy, small or large, the Osmo will accommodate them all.
I ordered via Amazon and it was shipped directly from Shenzhen, China via FedEx. Battery was mostly charged and it was topped off in an hour. Found the included paper material difficult to read since it was so small. Ended up downloading manual from DJI and read on my laptop.
Placing the phone in the mount is easy as its secured via a twist clamp. If you use a phone case as most do, the size of your case can impact the clamp. I have an Incipio case and the phone in the case didn’t fit well into the grooves. There is an auto balance feature that didn’t work with the case. Taking off the case and everything went well.
One needs to manually find the right balancing point for the phone. There are two places that one has to adjust — balance adjustment knob and where the phone sits in position in the clamp. I have an iPhone 6 and there was a gap of 3-4mm on the right side of the phone when in the clamp. Once the phone is level, turn it on and voila!
You need to download the DJI Go app and set up an account which will ask for access to your photos and microphone on the phone. The Osmo mobile connects to your phone via bluetooth. The sync via bluetooth is simple and uncomplicated. Turn on the Osmo mobile then launch the DJI Go app and your up and running.
The joystick allows you the pan left, right, up, and down. Photo button is larger than the video button so there’s good tactile feel. There's substantial lag between when the photo and video buttons are pressed before phone camera/video takes the picture/video. There’s a trigger on the opposite side which allows different functions:
hold trigger — stays in current position regardless of handle movement
2 tap — center’s phone
3 tap — switches to front camera for selfies
Stabilization is amazing! Active track allows you to track an object on screen as it moves. One may need to adjust framing of the subject using the joystick. Walking or running, the videos are smooth and clean. The battery of the iPhone got depleted rather quickly. The battery for the Osmo mobile has lasted over 3hrs; would be nice to have some sort of indicator. After about 30 minutes of use, it got heavy holding with one hand. Definitely recommend using the lanyard for security.
Weight:
17.25oz with battery
22.30 oz with phone 6 and apple leather case
Action sequences where you are moving and panning is where this really shines! For parents, this gadget would be fantastic for when your child first begins their first steps, learns to ride their bike, singing birthday parties, and sports where you can be close to the action. Traveling would be another great use as there's nothing worse than choppy video.
What I liked:
⁃ Awesome stabilization
⁃ Decent battery life on Osmo
⁃ Easy to share quality images/video
Things to consider:
⁃ Heavy after prolonged use
⁃ iPhone battery depletes quickly
⁃ Phones with larger case may have issues
- lag between pressing buttons (photo/video) and actual taking or picture/starting recording
Will continue to use and update as I learn new things. Thanks!
Since the release of the NEW!!! OSMO MOBILE, I was extremely excited to use it with the new LG V20 Cell Phone which has an amazingly clear 4K camera and audio system. I was looking forward to get the OSMO MOBILE it in my HOT little hands and test it out before I took it on a job I would be doing in Las Vegas. UNFORTUNATELY my EXCITEMENT was tarnished by lack of communications from Dji and problematic software inherent in this new futuristic marvel. I have not been as excited by a product since I acquired the steadicam which I owned in the early 80's, a model 1A.
I had tried to contact the folks at Dji for weeks prior to buying the device but I could not get anyone to answer my calls. I called tech support to find out how I could reach management with questions before I purchased it but I was told to reach out to usmarketing@dji.com, marketing@dji.com and pr@dji.com. All emails seemed to fall on deaf ears. I even called China 2x to see if I could have someone call me back. I do product integration and I wanted to use the OSMO Mobile in conjunction with some other devices to see how they would work together for delivering Spot Breaking news by a reporter when a camera crew is not available. With all my calling I could not find someone to talk to and time was running out so I just bought the OSMO hoping that it was the answer to a BRILLIANT outcome. Unfortunately the LG V20 and other Android hardware has varying issues with the software connectivity of The OSMO. Mind you I could not test theOsmo with an IPhone, but if you look at the reviews you will see they are pretty split. My guess is most of the dissatisfied customers probably own ANDROIDS. If you look at the Dji website you will notice the OSMO MOBILE is always being used with an IPHONE.
In conclusion I feel the Dji OSMO MOBILE could be a great tool if all the features worked with my phones. I feel Dji could have put more time into the development of this product for the broad base fans of this type of device instead of just setting it free and letting consumers buy the product only to be disappointed that it did not work with their personal cell devices. My Advice.....If you want a gimbal to smooth out your camera moves and you don't need a device with all the bells and whistles that don't work look into some of the devices that are made out of machined aluminum. They are more robust and you can screw them right to a tripod or a selfie stick without having to buy a bunch of other accessories to adapt them. Some of these units also have some cool remote controls and also have follow feature that are not as cool as Dji but they work. OR>>>>>>You could just dump your phone and get an IPHONE..
I do own the Osmo Mobile. It's a great system. It is pretty much the stabilizer that other gimbal stabilizing manufacturers have followed in design. the moving side arm to help balance the phone, the knob dials to calibrate balance on the sidearm and to hold the phones of various sizes in place is nice. It won't fit my Samsung Note 4 as the width is larger than the phone can handle, so you do want to check and make sure it'll fit your phone. I use this with a LetV X500 and the only issue is from the phone side as it is having a Bluetooth issue. Having Bluetooth and using the DJI app gives you more motions for recording.
You can do timelapse with movement. This is a great feature for the latest timelapses that moves from side to side as well as up and down. Recording settings from 4k and down based on your phones capabilities.
It's my choice for stabilizers and I say this as I also own a Feiyu Tech G3, which works just as it should but doesn't offer as much features as this one. The current Feiyu Tech is closer to what this Osmo Mobile does.

This is a first impression report and that impression is almost totally positive. The Osmo was delivered the day before the London New Year parade and the two hours of raw video I shot looks like it came from a tripod or an expensive crane system. The OSMO was used on a telescopic pole which gave me a great choice of angles and I could raise, lower and angle the pole while still retaining great framing and a totally level shot. Being able to hold the camera in a grip that allowed me to stop and start the video also avoided the almost compulsory finger in shot feature that you get from shooting with a hand held phone. I have tested the Osmo with an iPhone 7 Plus and an iPhone X. Both worked well, the only snag being that to swap from one to the other (necessary when battery ran low) required rebalancing the Osmo again. It takes little time but when one camera is running out of battery power and the action is ongoing every second counts. Another problem that affects all phones with sockets on the centre of the base is that it makes adding a better mic impossible. An old iPhone with an offset mic/earpiece socket would be better here. I have Googled solutions and realistically there isn't one and you are stuck with whatever audio the phone produces.
Most of the shooting was with the DJI GO app which links the Osmo with the phone by Bluetooth and provides most of the required camera controls. This app has some nice options, the best being Activetrack. Just slide your finger over a feature on the screen and the Oslo will keep it in shot. A couple of snags with DJI GO that I have found is that it stores its video within the app so to transfer it to a iMac for editing means first copying all the video to the iPhone's Photos app. Stupidly time consuming. The second problem I have found is that the choice of video types is limited. No 25 frames per inch UK standard for example, although the iPhone camera app won't offer this either. A browse around the app store found FILMIC Pro which answers both issues and allows a choice of frame rates plus 4k shooting on my iPhone X. Online checks say it works with active track but so far I cannot find out how.
Incidentally, if you are one of those phone users that insists on shooting in portrait mode the Osmo allows it. I wish it didn't though as a much better solution is JUST TURN THE CAMERA ROUND. One of the best updates that Apple could make to its software is block video recording unless the camera was turned to landscape.
Overall I am am very impressed with the Osmo. It's something else to carry so will not solve those spur of the moment recordings that phones are so good for but it's less hassle than carrying a video camera and results in some superb recordings. On final whinge and that is the name. Every time I type OSMO my computer assumes a spelling error and changes it to OSLO so if you see Oslo typed in this report it's a a spelling correction I missed.
