My Little Secret? Visiting Helsinki In March Is (Almost) Perfect

Visiting Helsinki in March is like catching it a bit off-guard, halfway between its winter slow pace and its spring awakening.

The snow and ice haven’t fully given up their grasp on the city, but it looks more and more out of place as the days get brighter and longer.

While I sang my praises about visiting Rovaniemi in March, I’d argue a lot of the points I made for Rovaniemi ring true for visiting Helsinki in March as well (minus the bit about the aurora — Helsinki is too far south for that, unless there is an out-of-this-world solar storm).

What I like most about visiting Helsinki in March is that it’s transitional in the best way: a mix of still getting to wear your warm clothes, admiring the crisp winter air and the joy you feel when you escape into a warm coffee shop, plenty of sunlight during the day, and most importantly — zero peak-season crowds.

Weather and Daylight in Helsinki in March

OK yes, March is still cold in Helsinki… but compared to deep winter, the month feels noticeably lighter and kinder, though that may be the sun’s more ubiquitous presence.

Generally, average daytime temperatures hover around 1–3°C (34–37°F), while nights dip to about –5 to –6°C (23–21°F)… so you’ll absolutely want to wear that thick jacket and have all the winter accessories. But you definitely won’t feel that super-cold feel the way you’d feel earlier in the winter season, like January.

It doesn’t snow a ton in March, but because the temperatures are often around freezing, ice tends to stick around — especially in the Baltic Sea, where large chunks of ice like to bob around in the harbor, especially around Suomenlinna.

Despite the still-present chill in the air, I have to say that I think March in Helsinki is downright lovely and one of the better times to go in the winter months if you can’t make it in time for the proper Christmas season.

Speaking of daylight, that’s one area where picking March to visit Helsinki instead of another winter month really makes a difference. If you’ve heard about Helsinki’s famously dark winters, March is a true pleasant surprise, as daylight starts racing back far faster than its southern neighbors.

Helsinki’s daylight increases rapidly as it moves towards Midsummer: on March 1 there are about 10.5 hours of daylight, by March 15 it’s roughly 12 hours, and by March 30 it reaches around 13 hours.

Things to Do in Helsinki in March

Visit a snow-capped Suomenlinna Fortress

Fortifications and deefnsive walls show the history of Suomenlinna as a battle site

Take a chilly ferry ride to this UNESCO World Heritage fortress spread across several islands — the history here is unreal and oh-so-tangible, and truly tells the story of Finland’s history moving towards independence in a nutshell.

With lots of indoor spaces and cafés to warm up if when you get cold walking the paths and admiring the icy landscapes, I think March is an incredible time to visit Suomenlinna, and it’s guaranteed to be nearly crowd-free.

Take a Finnish sauna

Warm up like a local with a public sauna session in one of Helsinki’s ultra-modern saunas. A major crowd-pleaser is Löyly, which blends modern architecture with traditional Finnish sauna culture. It has three wood-fired saunas, a lovely multi-tiered deck for relaxing, and an outdoor pool, even open in winter. And the restaurant isn’t half-bad either, especially its salmon soup!

Another option is Allas Sea Pool (pictured above), which is right on the harbor near Suomenlinna, and has incredible views, several saunas, and places to dip into the Baltic for that shock to the system. Both are great options in March!

Alternately, you can also do a 3-hour sauna session with a local Finnish guide, who will explain sauna history, teach you the art of mixing sauna with cold plunges, and just generally keep you entertained and feeling more certain of what you’re doing sauna-wise. Generally, they do the sauna session at a public sauna (usually Löylykontti or Allas Sea Pool, the ones I recommended above).

A guided food tour is a great way to mix up indoor and outdoor wandering and also get a good sense of what Finnish and Nordic cuisine is all about.

Taste unique delicacies that are hard to find outside of Finland — such as reindeer, squeaky cheese, cloudberry jam — all while learning about Finnish culinary traditions.

Explore the Design District and go vintage shopping

One of my favorite places in Helsinki is the Design District — it’s a great place for secondhand and vintage finds.

What better way to enjoy a winter day than by wandering the cityscape and popping in and out when different boutiques along the way? Plus, there are lots of places to stop for coffee at a cute, trendy café to caffeinate between shops.

Check out the museum landscape.

There are several great museums in Helsinki, and museum days are a great way to spend a March day especially if it’s a bit rainy or on the cold side.

A few of my favorite museums in Helsinki are the Design Museum & Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art — both are well worth a visit, but if you have to choose, I think the Design Museum is Helsinki’s best museum offering.

Events in Helsinki in March

  • Helsinki Handicraft Fair (Feb 28-March 1, 2026): While only at the beginning of the month, if you can attend the Handicraft Fair, you’ll be certain to pick up some unique handmade Nordic crafts that will make your home cozy for years to come.
  • Red Pearl Clown Festival (March 20-28, 2026): Helsinki proudly wears its weirdness front and center… and so it’s rather fitting that it hosts an annual feminist clown festival. Frankly, I don’t know what it entails, but if you happen to be there in the last week of March… why not find out for yourself?
  • Spring Fair (March 26-29, 2026): With an indoor-outdoor design focus and a look forward to all things botanical and spring, this is one of the bigger events for those looking for cool design elements to add to their homes and gardens.
